The UK has signed a contract to supply Turkey with 20 Typhoon fighter jets that can go up to £8 billion.
During his trip to Ankara for signing the deal on Monday, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called it “a victory for British workers, a victory for our defense industry, and a victory for the security of NATO.”
According to the government, it is the largest fighter jet export deal in nearly twenty years and it will give support to thousands of jobs in the UK for many years to come.
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarded the agreement as “a new symbol of the strategic relations” between Britain and Turkey.
At a press conference in the Turkish capital, signing of the agreement, Sir Keir termed it “a landmark event”.
He said, the 20 Typhoon fighter jets would “secure the NATO borders, elevate our mutual defence ties, and create wealth in both the UK and Turkey”.
Availing of the 20 Typhoon fighter jets will “secure the borders of NATO, deepen our defence ties and bring together growth” in both the UK and Turkey, he said.
About 37% of the overall production of aerial vehicles takes place in the UK, which encompasses the final assembly at BAE Systems facilities located in Warton and Samlesbury in Lancashire.
Approximately 37% of the total aerial vehicle’s manufacturing occurs in the UK, including final assembly at BAE Systems facilities in Warton and Samlesbury in Lancashire.
The government expects that the contract will generate 6,000 jobs across two BAE facilities, with 1,100 positions in the southwest of England, which includes the Rolls-Royce site in Bristol, and 800 jobs in Scotland.
This is the first new order of UK Typhoons after 2017.
The defence minister John Healey characterized the agreement as “the largest jets export deal in a generation” and said that it would “infuse billions of pounds into our economy and keep British Typhoon production lines working for a long time into the future”.
BAE Systems CEO Charles Woodburn stated that this acquisition ” heralds a new era of our partnership with this key NATO ally” and that “investment in defence can lead to considerable economic growth and returns in the UK”.
The pact is the result of a long negotiation process, with the UK and Turkey initially signing a contract for 40 Typhoons back in July.
On Monday, Sir Keir announced that 20 would go to Turkey “with an option to sell more later”.
The first delivery of jets is set to take place in 2030.
